About Dr Bastawrous

Dr Andrew Bastawrous is Co-Founder & CEO of Peek Vision, a social impact organization working to radically increase access eye care in some of the most challenging places in the world. Andrew is an Ophthalmologist (Eye Surgeon), and an Assistant Professor in International Eye Health based at the International Centre for Eye Health, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine where he teaches on public health for eye health and leads a research portfolio.

Andrew has worked and undertaken research in over twenty countries including two years living in Kenya where he was leading a major eye disease study and the development and testing of Peek.

Andrew has received numerous research and development grants totaling over £5million. Including the first prestigious Medical Research Council and Fight for Sight PhD Fellowship to perform a longitudinal population-based study of eye disease in Africa, and funding for the development and delivery of Peek from the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust.

Andrew was awarded the Max Perutz Science Writing Award from the Medical Research Council, his article was subsequently printed in the Metro Newspaper and was followed up by the BBC and received global media coverage. He was made a TED Fellow in 2014 and his TED talk has now been viewed over one million times.

Andrew and the Peek teams work has been recognised with generous awards including the Mazda Rebels with a Cause Prize in partnership with TED (€100,000) the Gifted Citizen 2014 Award ($100,000) and the Index Design Award, one of the world’s leading design awards (€100,000) and the Rolex Awards for Enterprise (CHF100,000). All prize money has been re-invested in Peek. Andrew was recently voted one of the world’s 30 most influential people in public health, one of the world’s “Top 40 Ophthalmologists under the age of 40” by The Ophthalmologist magazine and was selected as a “Young Global Leader” by the World Economic Forum and is listed as an “Eye Health Leader” by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. In 2016 he received the Clearly Vision Life Time Achievement Award and was made a Rolex Laureate.

Peek has run one of the top-ten of all time crowd-funding campaigns in the health sector on Indiegogo, together with prize money this has enabled them to bring Peek Retina to market.

Andrew has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles focusing on international eye health and mobile technology in healthcare and has co-authored four book chapters.

Andrew is also working with astrophysicists to crowd source retinal data, TED Fellows to map health systems, National Geographic explorers to reach isolated communities, Artists and Activists to advocate for eye care globally and with his wife Madeleine has established a social enterprise healthy bakery in Kenya that provides employment and profits pay for eye care.
