Streamlining Recruitment with OpenClinica

ICYMI, OpenClinica acquired Build Clinical, now called OpenClinica Recruit, last year. The company’s track record of success led to the acquisition – a track record that stands in marked contrast to the overwhelming majority of clinical trials (85 percent) that struggle to meet their enrollment goals.

During the company’s five-year history, we have delivered lower costs, better results and faster timelines for clinical trial recruitment. Recruit has recruited 50,000+ participants for more than 1,500 studies across 200 healthcare institutions. On average, our enrollment is two times faster and delivers cost reductions of three to five times.

Even more telling is our work with harder-to-reach populations, including oncology, gastrointestinal, metabolic diseases, pediatrics and even some rare conditions. OpenClinica Recruit uses a variety of strategies to engage under-represented communities, including:

  1. Ensuring campaign content visually represents the individuals being recruited.
  2. Highlighting important inclusion criteria at the forefront of campaign materials.
  3. Targeting interests and/or keywords related to the population being recruited. These can range from cultural interests to shared occupations, common symptoms, and more.
  4. Increasing the visibility of ads in specific geographic areas based on the demographics of the region.

And our strategies are working. OpenClinica Recruit enrolls U.S. underrepresented populations at up to two times the national average.

Clinical Trial Recruitment Made Easy

Clinical trials recruitment with OpenClinica Recruit enrolls diverse participants at 2x the national average.

OpenClinica Recruit Clinical Trial Recruitment Results

Take our work with the University of Virginia Center for Behavioral Health & Technology, for example. The clinical trial recruitment goal was 100 participants in 16 months. That is, 100 adults, aged 65+, with cognitive and sleep issues, a historically hard-to-reach population.

By the numbers, our data-driven, fully customized digital ad campaign generated 197,000 ad impressions with 1,428 candidates. Nearly 600 were screened and 275 were deemed eligible, yielding 100 qualified participants.

OpenClinica Recruit delivered 100 qualified participants in just 12 months. Even better, recruitment costs were 1.25 times lower than expected, averaging about $300 per enrolled patient.

OpenClinica Recruit: A Proven Solution to Accelerate Clinical Trial Recruitment

Two additional case studies demonstrate the success and breadth of OpenClinica Recruit:

  • Obesity in African American Males in Rural South Carolina Case Study

PROBLEM:

The University of South Carolina launched an NIH-funded research study observing health issues in African American males and geographic factors contributing to obesity. The goal was to recruit obese African American males between the ages of 25 and 65 living in rural South Carolina that could potentially benefit from a weight loss program. During the first two years of a four year study, the researcher had only recruited three of 30 required participants.

SOLUTION:

OpenClinica Recruit’s patient engagement services and tools enabled the researcher to enroll the desired study population by utilizing our algorithm to engage with individuals based on ethnicity, demography, geography and indication. We deployed native advertisements, targeting African American males with a BMI greater than 25 in specific zip codes across multiple digital platforms and pre-screened interested participants to deliver to the researcher.

IMPACT:

The researcher was able to complete the study well ahead of schedule and accelerate their enrollment 10x-15x the speed using our patient recruitment services. They saw an instant increase in recruitment velocity and were able to better manage potential participants on our tech platform. Further, the researcher was able to reduce their overall study recruitment spend by three times through the use of more targeted advertising strategies.

  • NIH-Sponsored Migraine Case Study

PROBLEM:

Albert Einstein College of Medicine launched a remote NIH-funded migraine management research study to help people improve and prevent acute migraine. The goal was to recruit 120 participants living in the United States between the ages of 18 and 65 that struggle with acute migraine.

SOLUTION:

OpenClinica Recruit created a customized advertising campaign with study-specific advertisements, a landing page, and a pre-screen questionnaire to engage and enroll acute migraine patients across the United States. Using our machine-learning and algorithmic technologies, we deployed advertisements across digital platforms to engage this population. Our platform enabled the researcher and their team to reach people struggling with migraine and that met all inclusion and exclusion criteria.

IMPACT:

This study was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. Using OpenClinica Recruit, recruitment lasted six months rather than the expected 24 months – 4x faster than expectations. The total campaign was 12x less expensive than what they expected to pay via traditional media outlets. This researcher was able to complete the study and is now starting phase two of the study – and has chosen to once again use OpenClinica Recruit.
